Voice over IP comes of age with SIP over MPLS

14/05/2008

Voice over IP has come of age as NetworkFlow becomes one of the few companies to enable SIP (session internet protocol) over its own MPLS network.

Voice over IP (VOIP) is rapidly replacing traditional ISDN based telephony as the primary choice for Enterprises. VOIP brings organisations huge advantages in terms of flexibility and potential cost savings but also raises new concerns over security and guarantees of call quality.

Until now the only option for many organisations has been to send VOIP traffic over the Internet. The Internet was never designed to carry voice traffic and so does not have either the level of security nor any Quality Of Service (QOS) to ensure that call quality is the same as traditional ISDN.

NetworkFlow has added SIP trunk functionality to its next generation MPLS network allowing ISDN type functionaility for incoming and outgoing voice calls over IP. This is already gaining great favour with customers who can combine many data and voice features on one, cost effective and secure network with guaranteed Quality of Service. NetworkFlow’s MPLS network provides tremendous advantages for organisations with one or many sites including the following functionality, all from one service:

  • Wide Area Networking between sites
  • Site to site VOIP (centralised PBX)
  • Secure Internet access (leased line replacement)
  • SIP trunks (provide ISDN replacement / resilience for inbound & outbound calls)
  • Secure home workers with private MPLS ADSL connection for voice & data
  • Multiple Quality of Service at all points to ensure accurate delivery of time critical voice and data

“This truly is the next generation of telecommunications networks,” explains David Alexander, commercial director of NetworkFlow. “For all its benefits, the Internet poses no end of headaches for today’s IT managers who simply cannot control the Data and Voice traffic. By offering our customers SIP over our MPLS network, we can guarantee a very secure and high quality connection that meets everyone’s needs.”

AboutSIP
SIP Trunking provides the ability to make and receive telephone calls over the internet.   SIP is a world wide internet protocol for establishing and maintaining multi-party, mixed media sessions over converged networks. SIP enables the creation and deployment of feature rich services that go far beyond simple VoIP calls; it is the signalling protocol which allows mixed-media sessions of  text, voice and video applications using existing devices, including PC/laptops, PDAs and future smart phone technology.   MSN instant messaging and the G3 GSM network are both based on SIP.

Where once all that was available for voice traffic were ISDN lines and expensive leased lines, NetworkFlow can provide SIP trunks as a low cost alternative over its MPLS network yet still deliver the functionality normally associated with a fixed line service. This can be delivered on dedicated private circuits and on broadband ADSL at a very cost-effective price. When this is added to free 'on net' calls to say home workers or remote branches and reduced call charges as low as 0.77 pence per minute for UK Local and National Geographic numbers, the proposition for customers with IP PBX systems capable of connecting SIP trunks is compelling. At prices that are more than 50% below the line rental for traditional ISDN lines, it's easy to see what a demonstrable return on investment this is to the customer seeking to provide future scalability to the organisation whilst reducing costs.
